  1. Not hiring the best for the job:
    1. Utilize online hiring system for all hiring.
    2. Perform background checks on all potential employees.
    3. Interviews should be conducted by center person(s) trained in screening candidates.
    4. Ensure all documentation and paperwork is verified prior to hire.
  2. New employee does not work safely:
    1. Ensure that all new hires have slip resistant shoes. Have a ‘No Shoes, No Work’ policy in place. Also, be sure that they are familiar with how to use any personal protective equipment items that are necessary to perform a task, and that they know how to use equipment safely.
    2. Perform a thorough orientation for all new hires.
    3. Ensure that an orientation plan is in place, with step by step procedures for the tasks that are to be performed.
    4. If a store is short and must bring a person on quickly, train them in specific, needed tasks, and ensure that they work those tasks only. Do not have them perform additional tasks until they are trained properly.
  3. Employee’s performance drops after hire:
    1. When training a new hire, always do the following:
      1. Have a training plan ready
      2. Demonstrate station procedures to the crew person.
      3. Have the crew person try each step. The crew person should explain each step back to the trainer, and explain why each step is important.
      4. Follow Up – Perform a formal, and informal follow up after the crew person is working to ensure that performance does not suffer. They have to know and understand that you place safety above all else.
    2. Document effectiveness of training and adjust or retrain where needed.
